Prototype – We took the .4 series and begun to engineer an even more powerful version. Unfortunately it became clear early in the development process that the limitations of the basket itself had been more than reached by the motor structure already on the .4 so effectively this became a complete redesign. There were many problems along the way and in fact the proposed price of the product doubled during the design phase simply because it was impossible to build strength into the speaker without beefing up the components totally. The first prototypes were tested in the factory and the second set of prototypes were shipped to the UK and then on to Greece in early Q3 2017. It is too early to tell when the production version will be available but an estimate at this time would be Q1 2018. - UPDATE - Prototypes have been tested in Greece and although there are pointers towards amazing performance potential there are problems and limitations with the design of the cone internally and so we are looking at reworking this. For this reason we suspect Q2 2018 might be more sensible as an availability estimate. UPDATE - Finally launched in Q1 2019 the BIG RED certainly makes a big impression! Our resident box expert has added some very high performance box designs for Q4 2019. UPDATE - Prototype 2. A revised prototype was constructed in the factory taking on board the Greek feedback and work was concentrated primerily on the VC and glue design. Unfortunately it is very difficult to fly large speakers fom the far east to Europe and so the incredibly slow process of bringing this speaker to market has been very frustrating! The second prototype arrived at BF Italy in May 2018 and was thoroughly tested by the team there. We are extremely happy with the changes and the new speaker passed all of the tests with outstanding results. Only two changes were needed - firstly a revised cone finish and secondly a carbon fibre dustcap to lower the mass and prevent the bond between the cone structre and final gloss failing under extreme load. The order has been given to produce the speakers and the new name is BIGRED. We are now expecting availability of this speaker towards the mid of Q4 2018. Product was released to market Q1 2019. Discontinued 2020, will be replaced by forthcoming TeamRED series.
